In my testing tool s package, I define a set of variables or constants that are suitable as insert values for SQL statements. I can then use these predefined values when writing test units. This approach has several advantages. First, global use of these testing values will create an environment where testing is done with consistency. In turn, because of that consistency, everyone involved in testing will know what these predefined values are, and then know that they are looking at test data if they encounter these values while testing. Listing 8-3 is the package specification for my testing tool. On the top half of the specification, I ve added globally accessible constants to be utilized by all programmers when writing their test units. These are followed by methods designed to aid programmers when writing their test units. By using these methods, the test data is consistently formatted and stored for easy analysis. Listing 8-3. approximations, whereas decimals are stored exactly as specified. Your users might not notice any difference between the float and decimal data types because both types can display values in the Microsoft Dynamics CRM user interface with configurable precision such as 1.25 or 5.786. Therefore, you may wonder which data type to use. Naturally, the answer will depend on what you want to do with the data. One possible guideline you can use is the following: Use a decimal data type when you require queries with sums across a large set of numbers or when performing comparisons in which you use the equal (=) or not equal (<>) operators. Consider using a float when you need to store fractions or numeric values you will be comparing with the greater than (>) or less than (<) operators. If you re really not sure how the data will be used, we recommend that you use a float data type.

The properties and methods of the objects used in OOP are defined through classes. A class is a blueprint that defines the attributes and behaviors of the objects that are created as instances of the class. If you have completed the proper analysis and design of the application, you should be able to refer to the UML design documentation to determine which classes need to be constructed and the properties and methods these classes will contain. The UML class diagram contains the initial information you need to construct the classes of the system. To demonstrate the construction of a class using VB, you will look at the code for a simple Employee class. The Employee class will have properties and methods that encapsulate and work with employee data as part of a fictitious human resources application.

We discuss the different data types in more detail later in this chapter when we explain how to add custom fields to an entity.

For every field, Microsoft Dynamics CRM defines a requirement level. The requirement level dictates the type of data validation that Microsoft Dynamics CRM should enforce when users enter or update data on a form. In addition to enforcing data validation, Microsoft Dynamics CRM automatically adds a label indicator to provide users with a visual cue regarding the requirement level of the field. Table 6-4 explains the three requirement levels and color coding.
